- Valinomycin is used in ion selective electrodes to diagnostically measure potassium (K+) concentrations in samples of whole blood, serum, plasma, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and urine. Broad diagnostic and medical applications exist for the use of valinomycin ion selective electrodes.
- Ionomycin is selective for calcium ions (Ca2+); it increases membrane permeability to calcium thus increasing calcium concentration in the cell. Ionomycin is also involved in the production of cytokines important to the inflammatory system.
- A23187, also known as calcimycin, is a calcium ionophore with antibiotic properties that kill gram positive bacteria and fungi. A23187 is most selective for manganese cations (Mn2+) and secondarily selective for calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+). This ionophore inhibits a variety of energy-related cell processes, increases intracellular Ca2+ concentrations, and can either initiate or prevent apoptosis in different cell types.
- Nonactin selectively forms complexes with ammonium, thallium, and potassium cations to carry them across lipid membranes. Pure nonactin can be used for ammonium specific electrodes.
